Some notes on palm pruning. Green fronds shouldn’t normally be removed unless suffering from untreatable disease or pose a hazard. Also, some palms, like the Sabal (Florida’s state tree), drop their brown fronds easily in strong winds. Also, the round crown of Sabal and Cabbage Palms are favorite roosting spots for bats. Which are voracious mosquito eaters.

A note on fertilizing. Palms like all plants need nutrients to thrive. They will grow well even in our notoriously poor soil. But they need regular fertilization. About 3-4 times a year. If you’re noticing yellowing on otherwise healthy green fronds, this is an indication of magnesium or potassium deficiency. We use a palm specific fertilizer to correct the deficiency.

One final note on palms. Palms can be susceptible to disease and infection. One example is Fusarium Wilt that Queen and Washingtonia palms are more susceptible to this. It is easily spread by pruning tools. This is why we sanitize our tools between properties.

Remove dead/dying branches which can serve as an entry point for disease.

Remove detrimental brush from around the trunk which can sap nutrients from the soil.

Remove unproductive down facing branches which waste the tree’s energy.

Tree trimming increases sun exposure and air circulation throughout the tree and underlying landscape, which improves the tree’s overall health.

Stump grinding

Stump grinding is performed mostly for aesthetic reasons. However, a stump can pose significant safety issue if in a high traffic area. We will endeavor to grind the stump as low as possible.
